Dear Mr. Rams,
Consider this Telegram Sticker pack a small tribute to your persona. I’ve been an admirer of your work from my early designer days, back in 2000. Your philosophy has influenced me and my work in many ways…
… Until I saw you at the Costa Brava. Sunburnt, soaked in sangría and with a totally naff pair of sandals with white socks. Was it you? I was so shocked I could not ask. I was speechless.
And then… I started admiring you. More than ever.
You, a living icon of modernism, of order, purpose and balance… You had The Courage. You broke the modernist vows to commit to yourself, to the pleasures of the heart and not just the brain, to the beauty of Dionysius and not just Apollo. For once, you were a little bit like us, Mediterraneans.
I wonder if there are more like you out there, if perhaps Jony Ive or Marc Newson hang out together to drink Manzanilla in the streets of Cádiz when no one sees them. Or if perhaps Naoto Fukasawa is eating Calçots with his besties right now somewhere in our Mediterranean coast, smelling embers while he sips a delicious Priorat wine.
Dear Dieter (allow me to address you by name, since you are one of us now), you’re always welcome here. Even if that relaxed German gentleman I saw that night in Blanes was not you, you’re welcome as well, because we know you Germans want to be more like us Mediterraneans, and we Mediterraneans want to be more like Germans sometimes. Isn’t that a good thing?
Looking forward to seeing you back soon.
